Help a dummy to learn & cast spells

Loving the game - thank you so much to the dev for making it and being so active with the community! 
But can someone please help this dummy figure out how to learn spells ?
I have gathered a few runes (Neo, Mor, Krom, Fyr), have them on my runeboard, but I keep getting the message "you don't know this spell", regardless what sequence and which runes I try (apart from magic torch).
What am I missing?
I don't mind a direct, spoiler-filled guideline but at the very least please give me a hint - I wanna be a caster soooo baaaad.
