How to rest?

If you replace the rest icon in the 6th slot with a spell, how do you rest then?

Put the first aid skill into the slot.

The whole idea of resting is to use cheap food to get back health, stamina and skill points not use them. I there no way to get rest back?

The "rest" icon actually represents the "First Aid" skill - it's the same. You don't need to put a skill point in it at first. Just go to the skill screen, touch First Aid - and select one of the six hot slots in the upper right.
By putting more points in the "First Aid" skill later, the effects of rest will be sped up.
